Brew Your Own Brew At Home
Brewing your own beer in the comfort of your home is a very popular alternative these days to buying store bought commercial brand beer. There is good reason for this. There are many advantages to learning how to brew your own brew at home. Making high quality beer at home is a great hobby to get into. It is almost as easy as boiling water.
The good news is that you can save quite a bit of money by brewing your own beer or ale. It is possible to clone your favorite store bought beer, at a fraction of the cost. There are also hundreds if not thousands of different recipes available for home brewing. If you can't find a recipe you like, you can make your own style, or modify an existing mix to your liking. The possibilities are almost endless.
The best way to get started and brew your own brew is to buy a basic kit. The most common type of home beer making kit is an extract kit. A basic kit should come with everything you will need to get started including an ingredient kit. You may have to supply a brew pot and the bottles. Twist off style bottles are not recommended for home beer brewing. A stainless steel five gallon pot will work for the brew pot.
Most basic brew kits are designed for what is known as a single stage brewing process. Once you master this you can then try two stage brewing. Two stage brewing is a bit more complicated and will require some extra equipment such as a secondary fermenter. A hydrometer and thermometer are also recommended. The two stage process will result in better beer when finished. If you master extract brewing methods, all grain brewing can save you even more money. It is a much more complicated way of brewing but has many advantages over the extract method. All grain brewing is typically the method used by major commercial breweries.
The basic brew your own brew process
The basic ingredients to any beer are water, yeast, malt, and hops. These are the core ingredients of any beer. The basic steps to brew your own brew are boiling, hopping, fermentation and bottling.
In the boiling step you will heat five gallons of water and add malt and salts. The more malt added the higher the alcohol content will be. Hopping is the next step and is where the hops are added for bitterness. Then the mixture is brought to a hard boil and finishing hops will be added for flavor and aroma. In the fermentation stage you will strain the hops out and pour the mix into a fermenter. Then add cold water and yeast. When the mixture has cleared it is ready to be bottled. The beer is then siphoned into a bottling bucket and sugar added. Then the beer is bottled and should sit for at least a week. A month is better. This is the basic concept to brew your own brew. There are variations and not all beers will be brewed in the same manner.
